In fact, integration with Office 365 is the number one driver for SMB project managers wanting to invest in MS Project, according to GetApp’s research.Īdditionally, MS Project shares a familiar interface with other Microsoft products, such as Excel, which makes the program intuitive for many users. Specifically, compatibility with Office 365, Skype and Sharepoint.

Pro #1: Integration with Microsoft software suite The following are the main positives-or pros-reviewers report with using this system. To read these reviews for yourself, go here. To compile the pros, we analyzed data from 200 reviews given by real users during 20, published across Software Advice, GetApp and Capterra. In this report, we highlight three Microsoft Project pros and cons to help you evaluate if this PM solution is the best fit for your SMB. Just as with any project management (PM) tool, there are pros and cons to consider. However, before rushing into an investment decision, we encourage SMB project managers to evaluate their needs and be sure that MS Project is truly the best fit for their business. Microsoft’s 30+ year-old reputation as a market leader is certainly a compelling reason to consider investing in their well-known project management software. In 2017, GetApp surveyed SMB project managers who plan to switch to MS Project and found that of those, 84 percent plan to do so within six months.Of those respondents, three in four work in SMBs. In 2016, GetApp found that 67 percent of businesses surveyed use MS Project. In summary, I have found the Compare function to be very useful in my job.Research by GetApp shows that Microsoft Project (MS Project) is increasingly becoming the go-to project management tool among small and midsize businesses (SMBs), despite the fact that SMBs are not traditionally Project’s target end user: It is useful to know how many tasks have changed in the % Complete column or how many tasks were added. I have used this process to develop a monthly report of the number of task changes in the updated file. I have used the export (or copy & paste) to Excel many times and Excel allows me to filter the data and record the counts of tasks where the Start Date has changed or the Duration has changed for example. This allows the data in the Comparison file to be exported to Excel if desired for additional analysis. The Comparison Report is a Project file that can be saved like any Project file. The left most column in the report is an Icon column that tells you when a task occurs only in one of the two files or the task name has changed. My preference is to use the "All differences" option, but you can make your own choice. Select "All Differences" from the top drop down list (default is All Items) and you will have a list of the tasks that are different between the two files. This image is from Project 2013, but the Report from 2010 is the very much the same. To use the Compare feature in Project 2013, Click on the Compare Projects icon in the Report tab on the Ribbon.

To use the Compare feature in 2010 click on the Compare Projects Icon in the Project Tab on the Ribbon: So the process is to Open the two files that you want to compare, apply the table that you have built and then run the Compare. Using the Organizer to store the table in your Global.Mpt file will allow use of the table in any file that you want to compare. Building this table will make using the Compare feature easier and faster. That way, I keep the changes at a manageable level. Therefore, I have setup a table that includes these columns.

The first question is, what has changed? The type of changes my management are most interested in are changes to the % Complete, Start Date, Finish Date and Duration columns. In my job, I receive monthly updates to the files that I review. The more differences there are, the more difficult it is to identify what has happened to the file. The more columns being compared, the more differences will occur. When using Compare it is a good idea to not try to compare too many columns. The fix seems to be to ensure that the Microsoft Patches are applied. I have learned recently that there are situations where the Compare feature does not work in 2013. Project 2003 has a Compare, but it was removed in 2007. Project 2007 does not have a Compare feature. This is most useful when comparing two versions of the same file. Compare is as you can guess, it compares one. One of the most useful features of MS Project I have found is the Compare feature.
